Steven Gerrard’s Rangers return announced as total agreement ‘close’
Steven Gerrard is poised to become Rangers’ next manager, with the Liverpool legend ‘close’ to completing an agreement that will take him back to Ibrox for a second spell.
Rangers are reeling from a dreadful start to the season under Russell Martin, which saw the former Southampton manager sacked following a 1-1 draw with Falkirk prior to the international break.
The Gers lie eighth in the Premiership, some nine points off Celtic and a further two back from league leaders Hearts, while they have lost their opening two Europa League matches.

In a bid to stop the growing crisis in Ibrox, the board have turned towards Gerrard, the last manager at the club to lift the league title in 2020/21.
He left to join Aston Villa in the Premier League and subsequently had a stint in the Saudi Pro League with Al-Ettifaq, but is out of work after leaving that post in the summer.
Now Gerrard is nearing an agreement to head back to Glasgow.
Transfer news insider Ben Jacobs reports on X: “Understand Rangers are now close to a total agreement with Steven Gerrard to return to Ibrox.
“Gerrard held positive face-to-face talks with chairman Andrew Cavanagh and vice-chairman Paraag Marathe in London on Thursday.”
Rangers job is no easy task
Gerrard’s first task at Ibrox will be to stabilise the squad and seek to regain some positive momentum after just five wins from the opening 17 competitive matches of the season.
He is thrust into this task with a team that was entirely built with a view to playing in Martin’s style over the summer.
Many of the new arrivals at Ibrox in recent weeks have looked lacking in quality, and it will be Gerrard’s task to somehow get a tune out of these misfiring players before the rebuild will begin in January.
Rangers’ next fixture – and likely Gerrard’s first in charge during his second spell at the club – comes against Dundee United at Ibrox on 18 October.
