Rangers boss Russell Martin has officially been sacked following the club’s 1-1 draw against Falkirk on Sunday afternoon.

Martin, 39, arrived at the club as Philippe Clement’s permanent replacement in June, however he endured a torrid spell in the Ibrox dugout and he has now been fired by the Scottish giants.

Rangers are currently languishing down in eighth place in the Scottish Premiership table, having only picked up eight points from their opening seven league matches, while they have also lost both of their Europa League fixtures so far this season.

Martin required a police escort following the draw against Falkirk on Sunday, after protesting Rangers fans blocked the club’s team bus outside the stadium, and his tenure at Ibrox has now ended ahead of the October international break.

The Ibrox hierarchy had been eager to retain faith in the ex-Southampton boss until this point, but he has now set a new record for the shortest reign as Rangers manager in history.

A club statement confirming the news read: “While all transition periods require some time, results have not met the club's expectations.

Assistant Head Coach, Matt Gill, and First-Team Coach, Mike Williamson, will also be departing.

“Russell and his staff have worked exceptionally hard throughout their time at the club. We thank them for their efforts and wish them well for the future.

“Further updates from the club will follow in due course.”

Who will become the next Rangers manager?

Former Everton boss Sean Dyche is currently the bookies’ favourite to be appointed as the next Rangers manager and he has been heavily linked with the job in recent weeks.

However, Steven Gerrard could reportedly be re-appointed by the Scottish giants, while ex-Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl is also under consideration.
