Rangers manager Danny Rohl reveals exciting Barcelona link

Rangers manager Danny Rohl has revealed that he has a direct link with Barcelona, hinting at the possibility that the next Ibrox boss could receive some of the Spanish side’s exciting young talent.

Rohl was officially unveiled as Rangers’ new manager earlier this week following the sacking of Russell Martin following a 1-1 draw with Falkirk.

The former Sheffield Wednesday boss has a substantial job on his hands if he is to turn the Glasgow giants around, with the Gers sitting on just nine points in the Premiership standings following the disastrous tenure of Martin.

Rohl has revealed, however, that he has a direct line to Barcelona boss Hansi Flick – and it appears that he is willing to use it.

“Hansi Flick wrote me a message, saying: 'Good luck and all the best'. It's great to have such a message from an experienced coach. It's also good to know when you need a call, that you can call him and speak football,” he told Sky Sports.

The 36-year-old has a long relationship with Flick, having worked under the Barca head coach at both Bayern Munich, where he was an assistant as the Bundesliga giants won the 2019/20 Champions League title, and Germany national team.

Rangers to sign Barcelona fringe stars?

Rohl’s relationship with Flick opens up the possibility of Rangers receiving fringe Barcelona players on loan, although the prospect of the Ibrox club picking up any bright young talent in the January transfer window is a distant possibility.

If Barca are to take an interest in sending players to Glasgow, it will likely be when the club is in a more stable state.

The Spanish system of B teams allows young players, in particular, to gain first-team experience at a lower level, thereby negating the need to loan them out as happens in much of the world. Barcelona Atletic, as the B team is known, play in Spanish football’s third tier.

Barca have loaned out some fringe players this season, including Ansu Fati to Monaco, but more realistic targets for the Gers would be the likes of right-back Hector Fort and Inaki Pena, who have gone to Elche for the year.

Rangers have not had particularly good luck in the loan market in recent years, with even the likes of Amad Diallo and Malik Tillman struggling to shine at Ibrox, highlighting the challenges faced by young players at Ibrox.
