His contract has been terminated and he will now have to look for another club.

''FC Barcelona have informed the French player Kays Ruiz that his services are no longer required,'' a statement on Barcelona's official website reads.

''The French midfielder's spell as a blaugrana, therefore, has come to an end. The Club wishes him all the best for the future.''

What happened to the former Barcelona wonderkid?

Having spent six years at Barcelona as a youth player, Ruiz left for Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint-Germain in 2015.

Under now-Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel, the Frenchman made seven appearances in the top flight.

However, in a surprising turn of events, he returned to Barcelona last summer, signing a three-year contract.

The deal even included a release clause of €50m, which would rise to €100m once he made his first-team debut.

But, the under-20 international, last recalled in March, has endured a difficult time at the Catalan club.

Held back by the coronavirus and injury troubles, the 19-year-old just made three starts for Barcelona's B team.

In fact, he only made a rather disappointing 11 appearances for the third division side.

There was even talk of him leaving in the January transfer window, but the club decided to wait on their decision to let him go.

And now, he is free to sign for any club, as a free agent, which should not be too difficult for a youngster that had previously shown so much promise - despite underwhelming in the last year.
