McGinn fires Scotland to first World Cup win since 1990

Scotland made a winning return to the World Cup as John McGinn’s first-half strike helped them to a memorable 1-0 win over Haiti in Boston.

McGinn’s deflected effort in the first half proved decisive as The Tartan Army got off to the perfect start in their first World Cup campaign since 1998.

Steve Clarke’s side now stand a great chance of reaching the knockout phase of an international tournament for the first time in their history after collecting a huge three points against minnows Haiti.

Brilliant Vinicius Jr goal earns Brazil a point against Morocco

Vinicius Jr scored a superb equaliser as Brazil came from behind to earn a 1-1 draw with Morocco in an eye-catching clash in New Jersey.

Morocco took the lead when Ismael Saibari beat Brazil goalkeeper Alisson with a beautiful dinked finish, before Vinicius found the far corner with a thunderous strike just 11 minutes later.

Having failed to impress for Brazil in past tournaments, Vinicius’ performance was a statement of intent as he looks to aid his country’s quest to win the World Cup for the first time since 2002.

Qatar secure their first World Cup point with late leveller

Qatar clinched their first-ever point at a World Cup finals after earning a last-gasp 1-1 draw with Switzerland courtesy of Miro Muheim’s stoppage-time own goal in California.

Switzerland took the lead thanks to a first-half penalty from Breel Embolo, but they opened the door for their opponents after passing up several opportunities to put the game to bed.

And their profligacy came back to haunt them as Boualem Khoukhi’s late header deflected in off Switzerland substitute Muheim to send Julen Lopetegui’s Qatar into raptures.

Australia stun well-fancied Turkey in Vancouver

Australia made a dream start to the World Cup as goals from Nestory Irankunda and Connor Metcalfe put Turkey to the sword in Vancouver.

Boasting a squad featuring the likes of Arda Guler, Hakan Calhanoglu and Kenan Yildiz, expectations were high in Turkey pre-tournament but Vincenzo Montella’s men were stunned by a ruthless Australia in their opening Group D fixture.

After weathering an early storm, Australia took the lead from a counter attack as Watford youngster Irankunda flicked the ball beyond Merih Demiral before finding the far corner with a composed finish.

And as Turkey pushed forward in search of an equaliser, they were undone by another quick counter attack - this time right-winger Connor Metcalfe cut inside onto his left foot before crashing the ball past Ugurcan Cakir.
