Barcelona are mulling over activating the release clause of Villarreal forward Karl Etta Eyong, according to Spanish media and Fabrizio Romano.

The Cameroonian striker is coming off a stunning season with Villarreal's B Team in which he netted 19 goals and provided six assists.

This potential transfer comes a couple of months after Barca signed another talented wonderkid for a nominal fee - Roony Bardghji, who joined from FC Copenhagen.

Unsurprisingly, Etta Eyong was promoted to the first team over the summer and is playing with the senior side this term.

It is fair to say that the 21-year-old has picked up where he left off last term. He scored against Real Oviedo on opening day and provided an assist against Girona on Sunday, playing the full 90 minutes in both fixtures.

According to Sport and confirmed by Fabrizio Romano, Etta Eyong's exploits have attracted the attention of Barcelona, who are now considering triggering his release clause.

The value of this clause is the subject of some debate, with some putting it at around $11 million or $12m while Romano states that Barcelona believe it to be lower.

Barcelona to sign Etta Eyong?

Romano emphasises that so far no talks have taken place but that Barcelona are attentive to this market opportunity, viewing the young striker as a potential long-term investment.

Should the Blaugrana indeed decide to sign him, Etta Eyong would then be sent out on loan to a different LaLiga side. Barcelona have struggled to register new players and are well-stocked in the forward department, so they would want him to get regular minutes elsewhere.

He could become the long-term successor to Robert Lewandowski, who is under contract until next summer. Though still going strong, the Pole is 37 now and coming towards the twilight of his illustrious career.

Barcelona are far from the only club credited with an interest in Etta Eyong, with the likes of Real Sociedad, Real Betis and even Premier League sides said to have enquired about him. Real Oviedo and Levante have tried to loan him this summer.
