Barcelona charged with corruption over referee scandal

Barcelona face charges of corruption over payments made to the former vice-president of Spain's referee committee, Jose Maria Enriquez Negreira.

The scandal erupted last month when it emerged that Barca had paid Negreira a total of €8.4 million between 2001 and 2018.

On Friday, a court in Barcelona heard that several former officials at the club plus Negreira had been indicted for "corruption", "breach of trust" and "false business records".

Barcelona face heavy penalties if they are found guilty of these offences, with the possibility of relegation from La Liga not off the table.
