Popstar Olivia Rodrigo has received thousands of messages from Barcelona fans over the past couple of weeks - and it's all because of new signing, Rodri.

The Blaugrana signed Rodri from Manchester City on a four-year deal until 2030, in a move worth around €75 million. The World Cup winner returns to La Liga after seven successful years in England, where he won four Premier League titles and the Champions League.

A Ballon d'Or winner, the Spaniard will join an elite midfield roster at Camp Nou that already includes the likes of Pedri, Frenkie de Jong, Fermin Lopez, Marc Casado, Marc Bernal, Dani Olmo and Gavi.

He arrived at the club to much fanfare and those who couldn't attend to wish him well in person took to social media to do so. The problem is - Rodri doesn't have any personal social media accounts.

"I don't have an account on Instagram, X, Snapchat. It was a decision I made when I was very young, although at that time it was not normal at my age to have enough personality to say no," he previously confessed.

That meant that Barcelona well-wishers took to Olivia Rodrigo's Instagram - due to her name similarity - to send good luck messages to Rodri.

The messages ranged from "Welcome to Barcelona" to “You will love it here, you Pedri and Fermin deadly trio.”

One user wrote: “I know you are not Rodri, but welcome to Barca anyways."

From the comments, it does appear that some posts are genuine, while others, like that last message, are simply going along with the ride.

Olivia Rodrigo-Barcelona connection

Rodrigo and Barcelona do actually have a relationship already.

In May, she announced a new partnership with Barcelona that saw see her logo act as the main shirt sponsor of the Blaugrana during a Clasico fixture versus Real Madrid.

Barcelona's main shirt sponsor is Spotify but through that they have had a number of music artists act as secondary sponsors, such as Rosalía, The Rolling Stones, Karol G, Coldplay, Travis Scott, Ed Sheeran and Rodrigo.

"Seeing OR [Olivia Rodrigo] on a FC Barcelona jersey for El Clasico, I don't even know how to process that," Rodrigo said at the time.

"It's been so fun seeing the jersey come to life and creating a full collection with Spotify and Barça. On top of that, getting to perform for the fans who've been listening since day one, in a city like Barcelona, is going to be so special.

"That's everything to me. I cannot wait to see them."

Rodrigo will be performing in Barcelona next year as part of her 'Unraveled' world tour but previously performed a more intimate gig in the city on 8 May, which was invite-only.

The home kit shirt with the special 'OR' logo cost €399 to buy with a signed top setting fans back almost €3,000.
