Dumfries has accepted Real Madrid’s offer and only the formalities must be completed, Romano confirmed.

Denzel Dumfries has the hallmarks of a Mourinho signing

A 30-year-old right-back, Dumfries will join the Bernabeu club to offer competition to Trent Alexander-Arnold, who has had a difficult first season in Spain since signing from Liverpool a year ago. Injury and a lack of form have both troubled the Englishman, who has missed out on a World Cup spot as a result.

Although Mourinho is not yet in charge of Real Madrid – a process that will be held up until next weekend at least due to the forthcoming presidential election – this is the type of deal that has the Portuguese’s paws all over it. He has demanded a decisive say in the transfer policy of the club, and it is likely that he has given the green light to president Florentino Perez for this deal.

Mourinho, a Champions League-winning coach at Inter in 2010, is known to love experience in his side, and Dumfries, who spent the last five years at Inter, which included winning two Serie A titles and a run to the final of the 2025 Champions League, amply provides this.

With an Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €23.5 million, Dumfries is known for his athletic, attacking style, which fits neatly with the DNA of Real Madrid full-backs historically. Indeed, in the previous two seasons with Inter, Dunfries has chipped in with 16 goals.

Dumfries and Alexander-Arnold: Is there trouble ahead?

The decision to sign Dumfries is an interesting one of the part of Real Madrid. He is, after all, a veteran player whose form has not been at its highest standard. Indeed, data analytics firm SciSports indicates that he has been in a period of ‘significant decline’ over the course of the last six months.

Interestingly, Alexander-Arnold has similarly struggled to hit top gear and has also been in decline for a prolonged period.

Complicating matters for Dumfries is that his physical impact on the game has declined. SciSports shows that he is both relatively slow and has relatively poor stamina compared to his wing-back peers in Serie A during the 2025/26 season.

This issue is unlikely to be so prominent at Real Madrid, where he will arrive as the second-string option to Alexander-Arnold.

Indeed, Mourinho will expect that the presence of two such high-profile right-backs will spur them on to reach their previous levels.

What’s Real Madrid’s next move?

Real Madrid are working quickly to reconstruct their defence after a very difficult season under Xabi Alonso and, subsequently, Alvaro Arbeloa.

Liverpool centre-back Ibrahima Konate is also close to completing a move to Real Madrid, with the 27-year-old out of contract at the end of June. He has also announced that he will leave Anfield after failing to come to an agreement with the Merseyside club.

Furthermore, Antonio Rudiger is set to sign a new contract, having agreed terms with the club, despite a controversial training ground clash with Aurelien Tchouameni.

These three deals have all the hallmarks of Mourinho signings, indicating that the renovation project at the Bernabeu is being conducted by the Portuguese in the background.

Real Madrid are also interested in Manchester City midfielder Rodri, with the Spain international hotly linked with a return to the Spanish capital.
