Gio Reyna gets €6m chance to save his career
Giovanni Reyna’s career has hit a rough patch in recent years, but the Borussia Dortmund midfielder could get a fresh start with a potential move to a top European club.
Fabrizio Romano reports that Serie A side Parma are looking to sign the USMNT attacker, who’s been going through a tough stretch.
Over the past two seasons, Reyna has managed just two goals and a couple of assists in 49 appearances. That includes a forgettable loan stint at Premier League side Nottingham Forest, where he struggled to make an impact.
Adding to the challenges, he’s faced criticism over his attitude, and his Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) has nosedived—from a career-high €50 million in November 2021 to just €7.8m.
With only a year left on his Dortmund contract, the Bundesliga club appears ready to move on, aiming to trim the squad and rebuild under new head coach Nico Kovac.
According to Romano, a transfer to Italy looks likely.
Posting on X, he confirmed:
“Parma submitted formal bid to Borussia Dortmund to sign Gio Reyna as key target for Serie A side.
“LAFC are not in active talks for Reyna despite reports, Parma are on it with fee offered around €6m.”
Is Parma the right move for Gio Reyna?
Parma could offer Reyna a real chance to get back on the field—if he can stay healthy. Injuries have definitely played a role in his recent struggles.
But whether the Italian club is the best fit for the USMNT star is still up for debate. According to SciSports, Parma scores a 68 out of 100 on Club Fit, a rating based on factors like player development, minutes, tactics, and formation.
Reyna would likely get regular playing time at Parma, but there are concerns that the team’s playing style might not complement his strengths—despite him being a decent fit tactically. Plus, the club earns just a two-star rating for player development.
By comparison, Premier League side Everton is considered his best overall destination, with David Moyes’ squad earning a Club Fit score of 83.
Still, Parma could be a solid platform for Reyna to reset. If he performs well in Serie A, it might not be long before a bigger club comes calling.
