Florian Wirtz to Liverpool: Agent raises doubts over huge fee

Liverpool are closing in on the transfer of Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen, but it has been suggested by an agent that a portion of the Reds’ outgoing could be “illegal”.
Arne Slot’s side are poised to pay a British record fee to sign Wirtz, with €140 million (€125m upfront and €15m in easily attainable bonuses) expected to be sent to the Bundesliga club.
Meanwhile, Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that the 22-year-old playmaker will earn around €12 million per year.
Parents payment in doubt
None of these payments will fall under scrutiny, but there has been doubt cast on the reported €10m that will reportedly wing its way to the bank account of the player’s parents.
A report in Bild indicated that Hans and Karin Wirtz stand to receive this staggering windfall as their part of the negotiations, yet it has been pointed out by FIFA licenced agent Jen Mendelewitsch that such a payment is not allowed.
On X, she posted in reply to a story mentioning the fortune that Wirtz’s parents are poised to inherit: “It is also illegal if none of them is a FIFA licence holder.”
A list of all the agents licensed by FIFA is available on the organisation’s website, but there is currently an injunction preventing German agents from being displayed. This means it is unclear whether Wirtz’s parents are registered as agent, meaning their eligibility to receive any money as part of the move is unclear.
It should be made clear at this point that there is no suggestion beyond the report in Bild that any payment has or will be made as part of the Wirtz deal, meaning that no wrongdoing has been committed by any party.
On the other hand, it would suggest that Liverpool will save €10m in this fantastically expensive transfer saga thanks to Wirtz for choosing not to have official representation in the transfer negotiations.
