Bayer Leverkusen's historic unbeaten run lasted for an incredible 51 games in all competitions during the 2023-24 season before it was snapped by Atalanta in the Europa League final.

Die Werkself were crowned Bundesliga champions for the first time in their history after ousting Bayern Munich with a dominant campaign in the German top flight. The Bavarians had won each of the past 11 league titles, but were unable to cope with Leverkusen’s blistering form.

Furthermore, Xabi Alonso’s side had the chance to follow up their Bundesliga success with further triumphs in the DFB-Pokal and the Europa League.

Leverkusen reached the final in both competitions and could have ended a memorable campaign as treble winners if they had managed to beat FC Kaiserslautern and Atalanta.

The latter, however, proved too tough a nut to crack as former Premier League prospect Ademola Lookman scored a stunning hattrick to snap the German side's unbeaten streak on May 22, 2024. Incredibly, Leverkusen hadn't lost a single competitive match in the season up to that point.

A few days later, in the Pokal final against Lautern, Leverkusen still managed to end the campaign on a high, doing the domestic double in the process. A Granit Xhaka wondergoal was enough to secure the win despite Alonso's side playing an entire half down to 10 men.

How many games unbeaten were Bayer Leverkusen?

Leverkusen’s unbeaten record stands at 51 games in all competitions. Prior to their loss to Atalanta, Alonso's men had defeated Augsburg 2-1 to extend their streak to 51.

They surpassed Benfica’s European record of 48 games unbeaten with a 2-2 draw against AS Roma in the Europa League semi-final second-leg, and extended their own record with victories over Bochum and the aforementioned Augsburg.

Thanks to their triumph over the latter, they became the first team in Bundesliga history to go an entire season unbeaten, a feat even Pep Guardiola's all-conquering Bayern Munich couldn't achieve.
