Hansi Flick has been confirmed as the new Germany coach, with the former Bayern boss set to take over from Joachim Low after the European Championships.

Flick, a former assistant to Low with Die Mannschaft, left Bayern Munich at the end of the season after leading them to a ninth-straight Bundesliga title.

His crowning glory came last August, when he led his side to victory over Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League final in Lisbon.

Speculation has been rife in a troubled season at the Allianz Arena that Flick would be leaving, after a frosty relationship with Hasan Salihamidzic became public knowledge.

Now the worst kept secret has been confirmed and Flick will be restarting working with the German Football Association once the European Championships are completed.

He has signed a deal which includes campaigns for both the 2022 World Cup and 2024 European Championships, to be hosted in Germany.

Low looking to go out on a high

It has been an immensely successful 15-year spell in charge for Low, with the high point coming in 2014 when he guided a Germany to the World Cup in Brazil.

But it has been considerably more difficult to make progress in recent years, since a group stage exit at the World Cup in Russia three years ago.

He will be wanting to win one last title before departing. Germany haven’t won the European crown since 1996, and they’ll be hoping that the final being in Wembley again, with the entire tournament being spread across the continent, will be a good omen for them.

It is hoped the return of Thomas Muller and Mats Hummels, who were told in March 2019 that they wouldn’t be selected again, could improve fortunes this summer.
