About Tom Weber

Tom Weber is a multilingual sports writer who specialises in European football and American soccer as part of his freelance work for FootballTransfers. He reports on the game with a broad, international perspective, bringing together news reporting, historical context and specialist knowledge of lesser-covered football cultures.

Areas of Expertise

Born near Dresden, Saxony, Tom’s expertise is especially strong in German football, but his coverage extends far beyond the boundaries of Central Europe. Prior to his work for FootballTransfers, he wrote extensively about the Asian game, Russian men’s and women’s football, lower-league American soccer and the broader evolution of football cultures across continents. His background also includes extensive historical research, including work on workers’ football in Europe and the anti-fascist World Cups of the 1930s. A lover of all things obscure, Tom’s writing often uncovers overlooked stories.

Experience in the Field

Tom launched his writing career in 2018 by covering the three divisions of the English Football League for a blog called Counter, before expanding into more wide-ranging journalism through his own blog, Football, Soccer and Everything in Between. Tom has published work digitally and in print for outlets including The Sideliner, Halb Vier, and Breaking the Lines.

Editorial Approach

Tom’s editorial approach is particularly focused on telling stories that may not receive widespread attention, while still making them accessible to a general football audience. His writing tends to combine clear reporting with broader historical or cultural context, which helps readers see the bigger picture. Because his area of expertise spans multiple countries, languages and football traditions, accuracy in sourcing and translation is central to his process. At FootballTransfers, this allows Tom to produce unique and insightful content.
