Messi finds himself out of contract with the MLS franchise at the end of the current year.

While there has been a degree of uncertainty about what the 38-year-old will do next in his career, Romano has affirmed previous reports that the former Barcelona star plans to remain in Florida during this twilight period of a stellar career.

Taking to X, Romano confirmed: “Lionel Messi, closing in on new deal at Inter Miami with agreement at advanced stages.

“Not a done deal yet as of today with few points to clarify and MLS approval to all conditions to follow.

“The agreement could be sealed soon with talks accelerating in recent weeks.”

Romano did not confirm the length of Messi’s contract, but it has been reported in the Miami press that the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner will sign a new multi-year deal with the Herons.

His switch to MLS has been a profound success on a personal, marketing and footballing basis. Although he has only been at the club for a couple of years, he is already their leading scorer and assist maker of all time.

Messi holds Barcelona talks

Messi might be planning to see out his footballing career at Inter Miami, but he continues to be courted by Barcelona for a role at the club after he hangs up his boots.

In order to do this, bridges will need to be built between the player and his former team, who he left in ugly circumstances back in 2021.

Ahead of Barcelona’s presidential elections, the team of president Joan Laporta has been in touch with Messi to begin this process.

Laporta hopes to give the iconic figure the overdue Camp Nou send-off he deserves in what would be a boost to his own aspirations of retaining his current post.
