Lionel Messi may have frustrated Inter Miami officials with comments he has made about his career prior to joining the MLS club.

Messi has announced that he will join David Beckham’s franchise after his contract expires with PSG at the end of the month.

The deal to take the seven-time Ballon d’Or winners to the States has been hailed as the biggest moment in US soccer history, yet 35-year-old Barcelona legend appears to be treating the move like a retirement lap of honour before he eventually hangs up his boots.

“I have achieved everything in football. There is nothing left,” he claimed.

“Does the Ballon d'Or matter to me? No, it's no longer important to me.

“I've always said; the individual prizes are not what matters to me.

“The collective ones are the most important. The most important prize at the moment is the World Cup, the greatest prize for me was my last World Cup.”

Messi also admitted that his future in the game is unlikely to stretch another three seasons, despite the chance of defending the World Cup trophy with Argentina in North America in 2026.

“I will see how things go, but in principle, no, I will not go to the next World Cup,” he explained.

Messi’s Inter Miami ambition in question

Messi, meanwhile, is clearly not too concerned about transforming the fortunes of Inter Miami during his stay at the club.

He joins a franchise that is presently rock bottom of the Eastern Conference, seven points away from a potential playoff position.

Messi did not even know the position of his new club in the MLS standings when he joined the club, with Sergio Aguero admitting that his close friend was surprised to learn their status during a discussion with him.

Speaking to ESPN on 8 June, Aguero said: ““I spoke to Messi yesterday, I sent him a message with a screenshot of the Eastern Conference standings and I said: ‘Your team is behind! You have to move up to 8th/9th!’

“Messi cracked up. He said, ‘We have to make the play-offs!’”
