Man Utd are in the market for a top class number nine this window and Gyokeres had been one of the main names on their shortlist, having previously worked with manager Ruben Amorim at Sporting Lisbon.

However, Gyokeres was always lukewarm to the idea of joining a United team who have been in disarray the last couple of seasons and failed to qualify for Europe next term.

Man Utd believe Gyokeres is joining Arsenal

United have tried to convince Gyokeres to change his mind but the club's former chief scout Mick Brown reports on FootballInsider that the Red Devils have now given up.

Brown says that United have accepted that Gyokeres has made his decision to join Arsenal. They will now pursue other targets, with Crystal Palace's Jean-Phllipe Mateta one to keep an eye on.

As for Arsenal, they have been unable to complete a deal for Gyokeres because Sporting Lisbon have been demanding a bigger than expected transfer fee.

A public war has erupted between the player’s entourage and his club over his asking price.

Gyokeres’ agents claim that Sporting broke a promise to sell him for less than €70m this summer, while Sporting have denied a promise was ever made.

Manchester City sporting director Hugo Viana, previously at Sporting, has found himself sucked into the saga with Record revealing that a voice note has been discovered in which he agrees that Gyokeres can be sold for €60 million plus €10m in bonuses.

Gyokeres is said to have informed the Sporting hierarchy of his unhappiness with the situation.

Consequently, Arsenal have been simultaneously working on a deal for Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko and would sign him if the problems surrounding Gyokeres can't be sorted.

Gyokeres is the hottest striking property around right now after having an incredible season, scoring 54 goals in 52 games in all competitions, and leading Sporting to another league title.

This follows on from his brilliant form from last season for Sporting where he scored 43 goals in all competitions for his club.
