Liverpool remain very interested in Porto winger William Gomes despite his recent contract extension.

The 20-year-old has been one of the breakout stars in Portuguese football over the past year. Gomes joined Porto from Sao Paulo for €9 million in early 2025 and has developed into a hugely exciting player.

The diminutive wide man bagged 13 goals in his first full season in Portugal and has continued to impress this term. He has scored twice and produced two assists in seven league appearances.

In recent months, Gomes has been heavily linked with a possible Premier League transfer. Numerous big hitters from England have been said to be keeping tabs on the young attacker, but no transfer materialised in the summer.

A move after just 18 months at Porto would perhaps have come too soon for him. Given the level of interest, though, his club have been prompted to act quickly and decisively.

Gomes handed new deal - but interest remains

On Thursday, Porto announced that the 20-year-old had signed a new contract until 2031. With Sao Paolo owed 20% of the Brazilian's future fee, the reigning Portuguese champions have made sure to protect - and even boost - his value.

His release clause has been bumped up from €80m to €100m, with Gomes joining Samu Aghehowa and Borja Sainz in Porto's nine-figure club, according to A Bola.

Despite this extension, the Portuguese outlet understands that the interest in Gomes has not diminished. His new deal is unlikely to deter his suitors, and a 2027 transfer may even be possible if he keeps performing.

Liverpool, in particular, are believed to be keeping a very close eye on the winger's development. What makes him so interesting to the Anfield club is that he is a left-footer who can play on both flanks but primarily features on the right.

The Reds lack this particular profile after the summer departure of Mohamed Salah and failed to address the problem during the transfer window, instead signing right-footed left-wingers Bradley Barcola and Victor Munoz.

Speaking to the media after Gomes' renewal, Porto president Andre Villas-Boas confirmed that the attacker is a highly sought-after commodity who not only impresses with his attacking output.

"We’re happy with William’s progress, which is why we wanted to reward him," the former Chelsea manager explained. "He’s attracted interest from many clubs, and we haven’t ignored that, but his commitment to Porto has been total.

"He’s a player who breaks all the statistical records through his effort and dedication, both in attack and defence. That’s part of Porto’s values - giving everything for our cause.

"We decided to extend his contract in agreement with the manager [Francesco Farioli], who felt this was the right time to reward the player for his commitment, effort and dedication to the club.

"We reached an agreement quickly because this was also what William wanted. Hopefully, it’s the continuation of a great story."
