'Diabolical' Tottenham make unwanted history after €366m summer spend

Tottenham Hotspur’s start to the season went from bad to worse after making unwanted Premier League history in the 0-0 draw with Everton on Saturday.

Spurs are still looking for their first league win - and goal - in 2026-27 after they were held to another bore draw which drew audible boos from home supporters.

Optimism was high in pre-season as Tottenham spent €366.35million (£314.4m) on 10 new players ahead of their first full season under head coach Roberto De Zerbi.

The north London club broke the bank to sign Sandro Tonali, Mateus Fernandes, Savio and Jan Paul van Hecke, while they also used the loan and free agent markets to their advantage.

Spurs fans rejoiced at finally seeing their side splash the cash after years of penny-pinching while the club built its incredible Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

However, that excitement is quickly turning into fear of potentially another season of underachievement, having finished 17th in the last two campaigns.

After suffering back-to-back losses against Brentford and Newcastle United in the league, Spurs have recorded stalemates against Nottingham Forest and Everton.

And the statistics make for grim reading after their latest draw - a match which saw De Zerbi’s men register just two shots on target, one less than visitors Everton.

Spurs make unwanted Premier League history

Only Crystal Palace in 2017/18 (first seven games) have endured a longer start to a Premier League season without scoring than Spurs this term, as per Sky Sports.

Tottenham have also failed to score in four successive Premier League matches for the first time since September 2006.

And Spurs, who have gone 407 minutes without a Premier League goal, recorded their first Premier League goalless draw at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium against Everton.

In an attempt to solve Tottenham’s goalscoring woes, De Zerbi has also made 12 changes to his starting XI - the most across their first four games of a single Premier League season.

After serving up another damp squib against Everton, Jamie Redknapp was critical of Tottenham, saying there is “no connection” between his former club and their fans.

“After spending £300m, I didn't think there would be a problem scoring goals,” he told Sky Sports at full-time. “But to not score in six hours of football is absolutely diabolical.

“For the first 20 minutes, I thought that this is what I want to see. There was a moment when Fernandes had a shot and the whole crowd celebrated. It's not great. 

“The connection with the fans and the players is not there. I don't know when they are going to get their first win. It might go on for longer, but I do still see some positives.”

Tottenham will look to kick start their season when they travel to Liverpool in the third round of the Carabao Cup on Tuesday evening.

And then Spurs will aim to record their first goal and three points in the Premier League this season when they host Aston Villa in north London next Saturday (19 September).
