Chelsea's top target responds to transfer failure

AS Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara has confirmed that he has “turned the page” following his failed move to Chelsea on Transfer Deadline Day.

The Senegal international was earmarked as Chelsea’s favoured midfield target to replace Enzo Fernandez during the final week of the summer window, and a €55 million agreement was struck on 1 September.

However, Monaco pulled the plug at the last minute and the deal ultimately collapsed, with Chelsea left short in midfield following Fernandez’s move to Manchester City for a British record transfer fee of €145m.

As a result, Camara has been forced to stay at Monaco until at least January, when he will likely be heavily linked with a move to the Premier League once again, with Liverpool tipped to battle Chelsea for his signature amid the uncertain long-term future of Alexis Mac Allister.

When asked about his failed summer move to Chelsea ahead of Monaco’s 1-1 draw against Strasbourg on Saturday, Camara told reporters (via BBC Sport): “There was a possibility I could leave. It didn't go through at the last minute and that's part of football. I've turned the page and am focusing on the season.

“I can help the team a lot. Football moves fast. Maybe other opportunities will come along. But for now, I'm staying focused on the season with Monaco.”

Camara has played every available minute for Monaco so far this season, and he is a key reason why they are currently second in the Ligue 1 table, with 10 points from four matches.

Will Chelsea rekindle their interest in Lamine Camara

Xabi Alonso’s side remain in the market for a new central midfielder and they are expected to address this area of the pitch in 2027, with Alex Scott, Manu Kone, Martin Zubimendi and Camara all on the Blues’ radar ahead of next year.

However, reports have confirmed that Chelsea aren’t guaranteed to pursue a deal for Camara after being left outraged by Monaco’s conduct on Deadline Day.

The Blues were furious by Monaco’s decision to cancel their agreement for Camara and it could prevent them from re-entering negotiations to sign the Senegal midfielder next year, which could open the door for Liverpool to pounce.

Instead, Chelsea are expected to prioritise a move for the aforementioned Scott, who is considered to be their primary midfield target for 2027 as they look to find a suitable long-term partner for Moises Caicedo in the middle of the park.
