Liverpool legend Mohamed Salah has reached a contract agreement with Turkish club Trabzonspor, according to reports.

The Egypt international left the Reds after a mythical nine-year spell that saw him become one of the greatest players in Premier League history. Salah's relationship with head coach Arne Slot soured last season, resulting in a contract termination this summer.

Although Slot has since been sacked, Salah will not return to Liverpool. Now a free agent, the 34-year-old can choose his next club. For years, his most likely post-Liverpool destination appeared to be the Saudi Pro League.

There have also been more or less strong links with Major League Soccer clubs San Diego and Sporting Kansas City. However, it is now believed that Salah's preference is to remain in Europe.

This has engendered intense interest from Turkey, where Besiktas appeared to be closing in on a deal for Salah just a couple of weeks ago. But it now looks as though he is heading to a different Super Lig club.

Salah agrees Trabzonspor deal

According to one of Turkey's foremost football transfer journalists, Yagiz Sabuncuoglu, Salah has agreed a two-year contract with Trabzonspor, who finished third in the league standings last term.

The Anatolian side have made some ambitious transfers over the past 12 months, including loaning Andre Onana from Man Utd in back-to-back seasons. Trabzonspor will start their Europa League campaign with a playoff tie against yet-to-be-determined opposition later this month.

While the news of Salah's agreement with the club is huge, caution is warranted, as it has yet to be confirmed by other sources. This is important to note because Sabuncuoglu has come under fire for some of his reporting lately.

Two weeks ago, he claimed that Besiktas had reached an agreement with Salah, which prompted the Istanbul club to publish a scathing statement. The report was described as "entirely fictional," and the journalist was accused of "openly misleading the public for a long time by fabricating baseless and completely untrue information."

A few days ago, Sabuncuoglu also asserted that Galatasaray had agreed terms with PSG-linked Lokomotiv Moscow wonderkid Alexey Batrakov, which has been strongly denied by Russian media. Batrakov is believed to be unwilling to move to Turkey.

Regarding Salah, Sabuncuoglu has made a follow-up post on X, suggesting that there is still a contract clause that needs to be approved before the deal with Trabzonspor can be made official.

At the weekend, Trabzonspor president Ertugrul Dogan poured cold water on reports linking his club with Salah and claims that there was already a broad agreement in place with the Egyptian.

"There is no such agreement," Dogan insisted. "As for plans to bring him to Trabzon [for talks], there is no such plan; there is nothing to it. If there were such a plan, information would be provided from our side, the press would be informed, and so on. There is no such thing.

"Salah is a very professional, highly successful player known worldwide. He is one of the players with the best careers out there. Of course, who wouldn't want Salah? That is a separate matter.

"Of course, the fans want to see a player like Salah, and so do I. Bringing in certain players requires a certain stance and a certain way of behaving. That's what I'm trying to do as president right now.

"I know people's focus is on this; there's no agreement, no planned trip. We will inform our community and our fans as soon as there is a development."
