Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Manchester United are set to seal their first signing of the summer transfer window in the coming days after a breakthrough in the deal.

United have yet to add any new players to their squad so far and they have also seen targets such as Mateus Fernandes join rival sides, which has led to some frustration around the club’s summer.

Bringing in at least two midfielders has been United’s biggest priority this summer and the Red Devils agreed a deal with Atalanta last month to sign Ederson for €45 million but a deal has yet to be formally completed after more than four weeks.

Ederson’s medical was believed to have been put on hold until after his participation with Brazil at the 2026 World Cup but reports emerged this weekend that United could have pulled out of the deal altogether.

However, this was denied by Romano, who confirmed that the plan was still for Ederson to complete the second part of his medical in the UK upon his return from the World Cup.

And the deal could now accelerate rapidly after Brazil were knocked out of the tournament by Norway in the round of 32 following a 2-1 defeat.

Ederson came off the bench to make his second appearance of the competition but could not stop his side from a stunning loss but the 26-year-old is now expected to switch his attention to completing his move to United despite the setback.

Man Utd focused on midfield additions as Ederson draws closer to signing

United have run the rule over a number of midfielders this summer after the departure of Casemiro on a free transfer, while Manuel Ugarte’s recent serious knee injury has ramped up the need to bring in depth and quality in the middle of the park.

Fernandes had been United’s top target as a marquee arrival alongside Ederson but Tottenham won the race for the 21-year-old after agreeing to meet West Ham’s €100 million asking price all up-front with no instalments.

But the setback appears not to have had an impact on the Ederson deal, with Romano insisted that documents had been exchanged and the final part of the medical was the only thing standing in the way of United confirming the signing.

United have also explored a deal for Chelsea youngster Andrey Santos as they look to build off Ederson’s impending arrival and complete their midfield additions before a return to pre-season training later this month.
