Chelsea spark 'crisis' with €50m signing
Chelsea have sparked a "crisis" at Rayo Vallecano with their pursuit of left-back Pep Chavarria.
The Madrid minnows are facing the same fate as every other well-run and overperforming small club: they are at serious risk of getting picked apart by bigger, more affluent teams.
Rayo Vallecano reached the final of the Conference League, where they lost to Crystal Palace, and they have already seen their successful head coach Inigo Perez depart for Villarreal.
What's more, a position that has not caused the team any headaches in recent years is suddenly becoming a problem: left-back. Rayo previously boasted Fran Garcia, who was eventually snapped up by Real Madrid.
Last season, they were well-stocked in that position with Alfonso "Pacha" Espino and Chavarria. However, Espino has already left to join Racing Club in Argentina, and now Chavarria is being chased by new Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso.
Chelsea spark Rayo crisis
Although Chelsea insisted that they trust Jorrel Hato and their other players who can play at left-back following the sale of Marc Cucurella to Real Madrid, it is now believed that Alonso wants to bring in a specialist left-back/wing-back for additional depth.
His choice is 28-year-old Chavarria, who not only brings the experience that Chelsea are desperate to add to their young team but also versatility and attacking drive. Moreover, it was initially thought that the Spaniard would not be particularly expensive.
However, according to AS, Chelsea have now sparked a "crisis" at Rayo with their pursuit of Chavarria because selling him would leave the LaLiga club without a recognised left-back.
This explains why, last week, the same outlet claimed that Rayo were digging their heels in over Chavarria and refusing to give Chelsea a discount. The Blues, it was claimed, had made offers worth €9 million and €15m.
Rayo, for their part, are demanding that his €50m release clause be triggered because they do not want to lose him. Of course, the Madrid club will likely soften their stance if they find a suitable replacement, but this has not happened yet.
As a result, this saga could yet drag on for a while longer. There is a feeling that a deal may be inevitable because Chavarria is keen on the move and personal terms are not thought to be an issue, but as things stand, Chelsea will either have to cough up more money or remain disciplined and patient.
