Exclusive: Arsenal told to pay €140m for Bruno Guimaraes
Bruno Guimaraes would “walk” into Arsenal’s starting XI if he joins the club this summer, according to former Newcastle United midfielder Jermaine Jenas, but he could cost up to €140 million.
The Brazil international has been identified as a top summer target by Mikel Arteta’s side and they have been widely tipped to submit a second offer in the coming weeks after seeing their first bid worth €64m (£55m) rejected by Newcastle.
Guimaraes has made 195 appearances for the Magpies since his arrival from Lyon in January 2022, scoring 31 goals, and discussions over his future are likely to ramp up following Brazil’s defeat to Norway in the World Cup last-16.
It’s understood that Newcastle have no intention of selling their club captain before the end of the summer transfer window and they are unlikely to be forced into a sale due to financial reasons thanks to the departures of Anthony Gordon to Barcelona and Sandro Tonali to Tottenham Hotspur.
Guimaraes currently has an Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €70.1m, however Jenas has urged Newcastle to set their asking price as high as €140m (£120m).
Arsenal receive Bruno Guimaraes message
When asked how much Newcastle should demand for the 28-year-old, Jenas told FootballTransfers: “What's Tonali gone for? £100m? Put £10m or £15m on top of Tonali is all I'd say, maybe even £20m. Guimaraes for Newcastle has been absolutely sensational.
“It's a shame for Newcastle, it really is. We had all that excitement at my old club with regards to new ownership coming in, and their hands have just been tied by the looks of it in terms of what they can and can't do. But to have got rid of [Alexander] Isak, and Tonali, if Guimaraes goes on top of that - and that's without even mentioning Elliot Anderson having to leave because of the financial fair play stuff as well. It’s tough for them.”
Arsenal bolstered their midfield roster with the signing of Real Sociedad star Martin Zubimendi last summer, but Jenas believes that Guimaraes would immediately replace the Spain international in Arteta’s favoured starting XI if Newcastle sanction a sale.
“Does he fit in at Arsenal? He walks into that team in my opinion. I think he walks into it. I think he's a massive upgrade on Zubimendi.
“Arsenal are going to be looking to definitely strengthen, and I think if Guimaraes is available, they'd be stupid to not bite his hand off. I think Manchester United might have a little look at that as well, to be honest with you, to see if they can prise him away. But Arsenal, I think he fits straight into their system.”
Jermaine Jenas was speaking on behalf of 10bet, the bet casino.
