Man Utd Transfer News Today: Scott emerges as new top target after Fernandes closes in on move
FootballTransfers runs through the latest Man Utd transfer news, rumours and gossip, including updates on Alex Scott, Felix Nmecha and Maxi Araujo.
Man Utd turn to Scott after Fernandes stalemate
Manchester United could walk away from a deal for Mateus Fernandes after failing to convince West Ham to lower their asking price for the 21-year-old.
Fernandes is thought to be among United’s top targets but West Ham are holding out for around €100 million for their young star and Tottenham appear willing to meet that price.
Consequently, the i paper report that United are now looking at alternative targets, with Bournemouth’s Alex Scott being linked up as an option.
United believe they can sign Scott for less than the price of Fernandes, although no contact has been made as of yet, while Bournemouth are so far reluctant to cash in on the England international.
Man Utd pushing for Nmecha
Manchester United are ‘intensifying’ their efforts to sign Felix Nmecha from Dortmund after the midfielder’s impressive performances at the 2026 World Cup.
Nmecha has started all three of Germany’s matches in North America, providing one goal and one assist, and the 25-year-old has long-been on the radar of United, who are now exploring a deal.
That is according to Sky Sport Germany, who say that United are ‘pushing ahead’ with a deal, with chief Christopher Vivell in ‘close contact’ with Nmecha’s representatives.
However, Dortmund would likely demand a fee of around €80m for Nmecha, while the likes of Manchester City, Liverpool and Real Madrid are also said to be monitoring the situation.
Experienced strikers on Man Utd agenda
Manchester United could target an experienced Premier League striker this summer to provide competition to Benjamin Sesko, with a number of players on the club’s radar.
Transfer reporter Ben Jacobs suggested United could look towards experienced players such as Danny Welbeck, Ivan Toney or a proven Premier League scorer like Igor Thiago.
Jacobs told The United Stand: “My feeling is that if they go for a number nine, it will more likely be a more experienced name and somebody that can really be a strong positive dressing room influence and come in during a long season, knowing that they maybe won’t play every single game.
“We have spoken before about how popular it might be to bring someone back like Danny Welbeck. Nothing is necessarily developing there yet but if they give that due consideration, the fanbase will probably like that. But I don’t think he’s a player that Brighton would want to sell.”
“Ivan Toney is a name that I’ve mentioned before, who Man United appreciate. Wage is partially an issue there because he’s earning well in Saudi Arabia. Let’s see what happens after the World Cup with Toney and if he is prepared to leave Saudi because despite constant rumours that he wants out, I’ve always been told that at football level and family level, he’s quite happy there.
“In Igor Thiago there is some appreciation there, but it’s not like it’s moving at this stage. And I don't know what any valuation or price tag or appetite to sell would be given the season that he's had.”
Uruguay star Araujo watched
Manchester United are interested in a deal for Sporting left back Maxi Araujo, with scouts being sent to watch the Uruguay star in action at the 2026 World Cup.
Araujo has scored in both of Uruguay’s matches so far and he also assisted his side’s second goal against Cape Verde in front of United chiefs.
According to Portuguese outlet Record, United are in the race along with Arsenal and Chelsea for Araujo, who has an €80m release clause in his contract.
United are thought to be pushing the hardest for Araujo but Chelsea could also consider a move after selling Marc Cucurella, although Sporting’s asking price would need to be dropped for either side to do a deal.
