Jarrod Bowen to Chelsea: The perfect summer deal
The 2026 summer transfer window will, quite simply, be crucial for the direction of travel Chelsea are heading in under BlueCo.
Four years after the takeover, Chelsea have failed to qualify for Europe for the second time and with star players such as Enzo Fernandez and Marc Cucurella both eager to leave, the Blues are sliding towards a catastrophe.
The 2026 World Cup will be a welcome tonic for Blues fans after a dismal campaign at Stamford Bridge and with Xabi Alonso starting his duties as manager on 1 July, there is at least some cause for optimism in west London.
However, Chelsea have to get their business right this summer and based on previous evidence, there’s little to suggest that will happen.
Last year, after securing Champions League qualification and winning the Club World Cup, things couldn’t have been much rosier at Stamford Bridge. A feel-good feeling was back and they looked primed to kick on. Somehow, despite spending €339 million, Chelsea remarkably went backwards.
The signings of Joao Pedro, Estevao Willian and Jorrel Hato have worked out well, but €137.7m was spent on Jamie Gittens, Liam Delap and Alejandro Garnacho, and they all endured torrid debut campaigns at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea’s back-up attacking options simply weren’t good enough last season and it’s something they have to address this summer.
Top target Morgan Rogers appears to be edging towards Arsenal and with Geovany Quenda arriving from Sporting CP in July, it may be wise for Chelsea to sign an experienced option.
Their pursuit of West Ham United captain Jarrod Bowen therefore makes perfect sense.
Why Jarrod Bowen to Chelsea could be the perfect summer transfer
Firstly, Bowen is likely to be available for an affordable price. West Ham need to raise funds following their relegation to the Championship and he is one of their most sellable assets, along with Mateus Fernandes and Crysencio Summerville.
Their relegation is also a reason why Bowen will be amenable to a transfer. Plus, the allure of joining Chelsea and therefore staying in London, given he has two three-year-old daughters, would be strong.
At 29 years old, Bowen still has a few seasons left at his peak and he is a proven Premier League performer - which is what Chelsea are after. The England forward has registered at least 20 league goal contributions in four of his last five seasons at West Ham, and that level of consistency is something Chelsea have been sorely lacking in attack.
He’s not the flashiest name on the market, but Chelsea need a reliable forward to call upon next season, and Bowen is one of the best candidates available.
Another key reason why a deal makes perfect sense is that Bowen would help alleviate the pressure on Estevao. Enzo Maresca had the perfect formula for managing the Brazilian’s game time during the early stages of last campaign, but that went out the window in 2026.
The Brazil wonderkid suffered two hamstring injuries in quick succession during the latter stages of the season and he is now out for several months with a grade-four tear he picked up against Manchester United. The 19-year-old is Chelsea’s right winger for the future, but an able deputy is needed now, and it would preferably be an older player who can help guide him next season.
Pedro Neto has consistently performed better as a left winger during his Chelsea career, and Bowen would therefore be the perfect back-up to Estevao on the right, with the Brazilian’s minutes needing to be managed by Alonso.
During the back-end of 2025-26, it was clear that Chelsea were worsening their team every time they made attacking substitutions, and that has to change. Bowen might not be the big-name signing that Chelsea fans are undoubtedly dreaming about, but he is exactly who the Blues should be targeting in Alonso’s first window as their manager.
