Man Utd reach contract agreement with first summer signing
Manchester United have reached a contract agreement with Atalanta midfielder Ederson ahead of a possible €45 million summer transfer, according to reports in Italy.
The 26-year-old has been earmarked as one of several midfield targets by the Man Utd hierarchy and they are understood to have ramped up their pursuit of his signature in recent weeks.
Ederson has also been heavily linked with a move to Atletico Madrid, but Diego Simeone’s side are on the verge of finalising a deal for Wolverhampton Wanderers star Joao Gomes, which could leave Man Utd with a free run at signing him.
The Brazil international, who has three senior caps for his country, has made a total of 178 appearances for Atalanta since his arrival at the club from Salernitana in 2022 and he has been one of Serie A’s standout midfielders throughout his stint in Bergamo.
Several Premier League clubs have reportedly been monitoring his development over the past few years, although Man Utd have been most heavily linked with a move and it’s revealed that an Old Trafford switch could be on the cards when the summer transfer window opens in June.
Earlier this week, it was reported that Man Utd were “pushing” to bring Ederson to the club this summer and Italian transfer reporter Nicolo Schira has now claimed that a contract agreement has been reached.
He posted on X: “Ederson has agreed personal terms with Manchester United for a contract until 2031 (€5M/year). Man Utd are ready to offer €45M to Atalanta to try to close the deal.”
Analysis: Ederson would be a great signing for Man Utd
Man Utd appear to be closing in on a deal for Ederson and data analytics experts SciSports believe he will be an excellent signing for the Red Devils.
The 26-year-old is regarded as a better player than his compatriot Casemiro as per his SciSkill rating, and he would automatically become Man Utd’s highest quality midfield option, according to the algorithm.
Furthermore, given he will cost a fraction of the €120m that Nottingham Forest are asking for Elliot Anderson, it’s clear that signing Ederson would be a cost-effective way for Man Utd to bolster their ranks in the middle of the park this summer.
