Chelsea defender Wesley Fofana reportedly has no intention of leaving the club this summer, despite growing speculation suggesting that he could be offloaded.

The France international moved to Stamford Bridge from Leicester City for an eye-watering fee of €80.4 million back in 2022, but he has struggled to live up to that price tag due to a combination of injury issues and poor form.

Fofana was one of the first signings of the BlueCo era in west London, however he has only made 68 appearances since arriving at Chelsea and despite moments of excellence, he is still yet to display the promise he showed at Leicester.

The 25-year-old has missed a total of 126 matches through injury during his four-year Chelsea career to date and he has now slid down the pecking order under interim boss Calum McFarlane following several weeks of poor performances.

Fofana hasn’t played since being hooked at half-time during Chelsea’s dismal 3-0 loss away to Brighton & Hove Albion in Liam Rosenior’s final game in charge, with Trevoh Chalobah and Tosin Adarabioyo selected at centre-back for the win over Leeds United and the defeat to Nottingham Forest.

Levi Colwill returned off the bench against the latter, replacing Tosin at half-time, and Fofana is also likely to be behind Jorrel Hato in the pecking order as things stand, with the Dutchman having impressed during Rosenior’s reign.

Fofana was at fault for a number of goals in defeats to Paris Saint-Germain, Newcastle United and Everton, and with a number of players now favoured ahead of him, he has emerged as a prime candidate to be sold this summer.

However, The Daily Mail have now confirmed that Fofana has no intention of leaving Chelsea, despite rumours previously suggesting he could be open to a move to Marseille.

Analysis: Should Chelsea sell Wesley Fofana?

Chelsea are expected to address the centre-back position during the upcoming transfer window and widespread reports have confirmed they will add at least one new player this summer.

Axel Disasi and Benoit Badiashile are both set to be sold on permanent deals, Mamadou Sarr, Aaron Anselmino and potentially Josh Acheampong may be sent out on loan, while the future of Tosin remains uncertain.

Keeping Fofana could therefore be a sensible idea, given the fact he is an excellent player on his day, but he should only be retained as a back-up option to Colwill and whoever is signed to partner the England defender.

Furthermore, if Chelsea are offered the chance to recoup a significant portion of their investment in the Frenchman, it could prove too good to turn down.
