€85m superstar makes decision on Man Utd transfer
Matthijs de Ligt could reportedly leave Manchester United this summer following his struggles with injury this season.
The Netherlands international has been ruled out of action since late November due to a back injury and he has only made 14 appearances across all competitions this term as a result.
The 26-year-old played the entire 90 minutes in all 13 of Man Utd’s opening Premier League fixtures, after cementing himself as a regular under Ruben Amorim, but he is already beginning to consider his future at Old Trafford.
That is according to Spanish publication Fichajes, who claim that Atletico Madrid have emerged as strong contenders to sign De Ligt during the upcoming summer transfer window.
Jose Gimenez has been linked with a Wanda Metropolitano exit in recent months and Diego Simeone’s side have reportedly earmarked De Ligt as a potential replacement for the Uruguay international ahead of the 2026-27 season.
Matthijs de Ligt to join Atletico Madrid?
It’s reported that De Ligt is viewed as the perfect player for Simeone’s system, and his representatives are understood to be exploring his options as they prepare for a possible transfer this summer.
The Dutchman joined Man Utd when Erik ten Hag was in charge, and he is reportedly now looking to leave the Red Devils if he receives a suitable offer, while Michael Carrick’s side are open to sanctioning a sale for the right price.
De Ligt briefly became the most expensive defender in the world when he joined Juventus for €85.5 million in 2019, but Man Utd only paid €45m to sign him in 2024, and it’s reported that a fee of €40m could be enough for Atletico Madrid to secure his signature this summer.
Man Utd already have Leny Yoro, Lisandro Martinez, Ayden Heaven and Harry Maguire as centre-backs options for next season, if De Ligt departs, while the club have also held further talks with Jarrad Branthwaite ahead of a potential pursuit during the upcoming transfer window.
