Man Utd 'getting closer' to agreeing deal with €60m star - Carrick
Manchester United interim boss Michael Carrick has confirmed that his side are “getting closer” to finalising a contract extension agreement with Kobbie Mainoo.
The England international has returned to prominence since the sacking of Ruben Amorim in January and he has been one of the Red Devils’ standout performers during Carrick’s short spell in charge at Old Trafford.
Mainoo failed to start a single Premier League match in 2025-26 before Carrick’s arrival, but he has now been included in the starting XI for 10 consecutive English top flight fixtures and he is back in contention for selection for the upcoming World Cup as a result.
The 20-year-old was widely tipped to join Napoli last summer and in January, after falling down the pecking order under Amorim, but Mainoo is now expected to remain at Man Utd for the foreseeable future and the club are locked in talks over a new deal.
Mainoo’s current contract is due to expire in 2027, however he is on the verge of following in Harry Maguire’s footsteps by putting pen to paper on fresh terms.
Confirmed: Kobbie Mainoo close to signing new Man Utd contract
Speaking ahead of Man Utd’s Premier League clash versus Leeds United on Monday, Carrick was asked if he is confident that Mainoo will sign a new contract before the 2025-26 season draws to a close.
In response, he told reporters: “Obviously we'd like to think so, yeah, and it's getting closer so we're positive with that.
“We’re calm with it, but we're positive with it. Time will tell how it goes, but at the moment we're in a good place with it.”
After finalising a deal with Mainoo, the Man Utd hierarchy are expected to turn their attention to appointing a new permanent head coach, with Carrick currently the favourite for the job following his fantastic spell as caretaker manager.
The Red Devils are also interested in signing a new left winger and a new central midfielder this summer, with the likes of Yan Diomande (RB Leipzig) and Elliot Anderson (Nottingham Forest) identified as key targets before the transfer window opens in June.
