Dortmund drop major Sancho return hint as Man Utd winger gets transfer ultimatum
Dortmund boss Niko Kovac dropped a big hint that Jadon Sancho could make a return to the Bundesliga side this summer but only on one condition.
Sancho will leave Manchester United this summer when his contract expires after enduring a disastrous time since joining the Red Devils from Dortmund for €85 million in 2021.
United will avoid activating their one-year option in Sancho’s contract and allow him to leave as a free agent, prompting Dortmund director Lars Ricken to openly declare their interest in bringing the England star back to the club where he made his name.
And the interest appears to be approved by Kovac, who admitted that Dortmund were ‘missing’ a player like Sancho in their side this season.
“What we certainly don’t have are those players that maybe some people here would like to see – with those extra skills," Kovac said this week.
“I think what we or the fans are missing is maybe players like Jadon Sancho, Haaland, Dembélé and Marco Reus.”
Dortmund issue Sancho ultimatum
Sancho has not played for United since 2023 and has spent the subsequent time on loan at Dortmund and Chelsea before joining Villa last summer after failing to agree a permanent move to Stamford Bridge.
While Dortmund are interested in bringing Sancho back to the club for a third stint, The Mirror report that the winger will need to lower his wage expectations to seal a move, with his current contract believed to be worth more than €250,000-per-week.
It is suggested that Sancho would need to accept wages closer to €150,000 if he wishes to make a return to Dortmund, where he played the best football of his career.
Sancho has been on loan at Aston Villa this season but he has failed to impress and convince Unai Emery’s side or United of his credentials as a Premier League player.
The 26-year-old has made 19 league appearances for Villa but only eight have been starts and he has provided just two assists in that time.
