Xabi Alonso picks his first Liverpool signing
Xabi Alonso is reportedly eager to raid his former club Real Madrid for the signing of Arda Guler this summer if he is appointed as the new Liverpool manager.
The Spaniard departed Los Blancos by mutual consent earlier this year and he has been heavily tipped to replace Arne Slot as Liverpool boss following the conclusion of the 2025-26 campaign.
Slot guided the Reds to just their second ever Premier League title during his debut season at the helm, but results have dipped significantly this term and there are growing rumours that he could be set to leave the club this summer.
It’s understood that Slot is under immense pressure at Anfield and the club are widely expected to review his position as head coach when the campaign draws to a close.
Club legend Jurgen Klopp has been linked with a shock return in recent months, although the aforementioned Alonso is considered to be the current favourite to replace Slot in the Anfield dugout if Liverpool opt to initiate a managerial change this summer.
The former Reds midfielder was tipped to return to the club before the appointment of Slot in 2024 and he is now the clear frontrunner for the job.
Xabi Alonso wants to sign Arda Guler
If Alonso is appointed as the new Liverpool manager, he will reportedly target an ambitious summer move for Guler.
That is according to Spanish publication Fichajes, who claim that Guler has been earmarked as Alonso’s top attacking target amid Liverpool’s pursuit of forward reinforcements after confirmation that Mohamed Salah will depart the club this summer.
Alonso handed Guler a prominent role in the Real Madrid first-team following his appointment last year and he is keen to work with the Turkey international if he moves back to Anfield ahead of 2026-27.
Guler has scored four goals and provided 13 assists in 45 games so far this season, but Real Madrid currently have no intention of selling one of their most talented young players.
