Florian Wirtz at risk as Liverpool plot another summer spending spree
Liverpool are reportedly ready to sanction another summer spending spree as they look to bolster the midfield options available to Arne Slot.
The Reds spent just shy of €500 million on Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike, Milos Kerkez, Jeremie Frimpong and Giovanni Leoni last year, but they have endured a disappointing campaign and are primed to make several new signings again in 2026.
Slot’s side are currently sixth in the Premier League table and they are expected to sign a new centre-back to replace Ibrahima Konate, who may depart on a Bosman deal in July, in addition to at least one new winger amid rumours that Mohamed Salah will leave Anfield.
However, the Liverpool hierarchy are also keen to strengthen their options in midfield too, according to IndyKaila.
The renowned social media transfer reporter claims that Liverpool want to oversee a “full reset in midfield”, with Inter Milan’s Nicolo Barella and Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White both identified as key targets.
Liverpool want new midfielders
Liverpool are keen to finalise a contract extension with Dominik Szoboszlai this summer, but he is wanted by Real Madrid, who have also been linked with a move for Alexis Mac Allister in recent months.
Curtis Jones has been tipped to depart too, amid his lack of significant game time, although Ryan Gravenberch has officially ended transfer speculation linking him with an exit by signing a new deal at Anfield until 2032.
As a result, Liverpool want to sign at least one new central midfielder this summer.
Barella has been a standout performer for Inter for several seasons and he could be set to finally secure a move to the Premier League following years of rumours.
On the other hand, Gibbs-White has caught the eye for Nottingham Forest and could feasibly be seen as a player capable of replacing Wirtz in the Liverpool starting XI, with the Germany star struggling since his arrival from Bayer Leverkusen.
Wirtz has 14 goal contributions in all competitions so far this season and despite a recent upturn in form, he is yet to hit the heights expected of him following his €125m summer transfer.
Gibbs-White on the other hand has 10 goals and five assists for Forest this term and given he has worn the captain’s armband throughout this campaign, he would add vital leadership to a Liverpool squad who could soon lose Andrew Robertson and Virgil van Dijk.
