Arne Slot can't refuse! Liverpool given golden opportunity to sign Robertson replacement
Liverpool will need to sign cover at left-back in the summer as Andrew Robertson prepares to depart on a free transfer – and the door’s just been opened for the Reds to make an ideal signing.
Robertson is set to leave Anfield as a free agent when his contract expires in June, leaving Arne Slot’s side short of options at left-back.
Milos Kerkez was signed last summer in a €47 million deal from Bournemouth, and while he has been Slot’s favoured option, he’s not exactly been a star performer.
Liverpool have been presented with an ideal opportunity to upgrade that area of their side.
Barcelona put Alejandro Balde on the market
Barcelona are ready to listen to offers for Alejandro Balde, according to Matteo Moretto, who claims that sporting director Deco is not convinced by the quality of the 22-year-old Spain left-back.
“Deco has his ideas, and among them are doubts about Alejandro Balde’s future. Barca would listen to offers; Balde is not an untouchable player,” he told Radio Marca.
“It’s like Camavinga at Real Madrid: Alejandro Balde could leave if a good offer comes in.”
Liverpool before Man Utd
Balde has been most recently linked with a transfer to Manchester United, but Liverpool represents a far better option for the player, according to data analytics firm SciSports.
The experts’ Career Advice tool analyses potential transfers and gives each team a Club Fit score based on a variety of factors including potential development, game time, formation and style.
Liverpool score 73 in this analysis. The Reds sit second among all clubs level with Atletico Madrid – and in reality their figure will be higher because it does not take into account Robertson’s imminent departure.
Man Utd, on the other hand, only score 57.
Why Balde is such a good option for Liverpool
Balde is a player similar in style to Trent Alexander-Arnold, whose swashbuckling performances down the right won the acclaim of the Liverpool crowd until he turned his back on the club to sign for Real Madrid.
Players with his attacking intent are loved by the Anfield fans, and he has the quality to back that intent up.
SciSports give him a Skill Score based on in-game performance of 81.0. His potential is as high as 91.8.
In both these regards, he is better than anything Liverpool have at present. Slot’s preferred first choice Kerkez rates at 76.5 with a potential of 89.3 – figures well below those of Balde.
Barcelona’s demands
Moretto did not report what type of offer that Barcelona would be willing to accept, yet Balde’s Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) stands at €59.9m, which coincidentally is exactly the same figure as Kerkez.
If Liverpool could tempt the Catalan side to sell for a figure around this value, it would represent an excellent piece of business.
Balde would not only bring an instant replacement for Robertson, but he would act as an upgrade on Kerkez while bringing Alexander-Arnold’s energy back to Anfield. It seems a match made in footballing heaven.
