Erling Haaland has been the subject of transfer talks at Barcelona, with presidential candidate Victor Font confirming that discussions have been had with Manchester City over a deal in the long term.

Haaland may have signed a 10-year contract with City in January 2025 but that has not stopped speculation that his future will one day lie away from the Premier League giants.

With Pep Guardiola not certain of staying at the Etihad beyond the summer, Real Madrid and Barcelona are particularly linked with the Norway international forward.

Haaland to Barcelona: Strong source confirms meeting

Barca have been crippled with financial problems for several years, but according to Font, who will go head-to-head with Joan Laporta in Sunday’s presidential election at the club, the Catalans have a chance of landing Haaland in the future.

His team have already held a meeting with senior officials from City, The Times confirmed. The Premier League side were certainly treating it seriously, with sporting director Hugo Viana and CEO Ferran Soriano both present to represent them.

What did Victor Font say about Haaland?

Font confirmed that Haaland was a topic of discussion as he told SER Catalunya: “Haaland is one of the best strikers in the world right now, no doubt.

“In the short-term he's not a possible signing. He signed a long-term deal last year, but I personally am convinced that these contracts of 10 years or whatever, it's difficult that they're fulfilled.

“So we have to be prepared for when players of this talent become available. He's spoken about his love of Spain. I remember Pep’s City playing here against Xavi’s Barca and Erling saying he loved Camp Nou.

"Madrid, of course, have wanted him, a player of his quality, so making a move to ensure we're at front of the queue doesn't seem a bad idea to me. I am convinced we can secure this preferential option to sign him if one day he wants to be part of a new project.

"We are speaking about it with City. They have no interest in selling Haaland, of course, but they recognise you never know what can happen with a player in the medium to long-term.

"Hopefully we can announce something as soon as possible. I don't know if it will be possible before Sunday."

Agent shuts down transfer talk

Haaland’s agent Rafaela Pimenta has moved to cool speculation, however.

“We have a lot of respect and admiration for Barcelona, but there hasn't been any contact whatsoever regarding a potential transfer," Pimenta told La Sexta (via ESPN) on Thursday.

“The player renewed his contract a few months ago, he's very happy at Manchester City.

“Everything is going very well for him and we really have nothing to discuss about a transfer when everything is so good at City.”

Both Barcelona and Pimenta agree that Haaland is not a current transfer topic, but the Catalans are clearly eager that their name is associated with the Manchester City star at this important crossroads in the club’s future.
