CONFIRMED: Man Utd in talks to hijack Liverpool signing
Manchester United have held talks with the representatives of Wolves wonderkid Mateus Mane as they seek to beat Liverpool to his signing, according to a report.
The 18-year-old has emerged as one of the biggest breakout stars in the Premier League this term. The fact that Wolves have endured such a dire season has been a blessing in disguise for Mane.
The inexperienced teenager has been afforded plenty of opportunities he may otherwise not have received if his club still had a genuine chance of survival. Although Mane made his senior debut last season, he didn't properly break into the team until November.
Since then, he has been a rare positive for the Molineux side, notching a couple of goals and assists in the Premier League. However, Wolves' performance levels have declined again in recent games, and this has also impacted Mane's form.
Nevertheless, Mane is evidently a massive prospect. With Wolves Championship-bound, several Premier League sides are keen to keep the Portuguese-born England youth international in the division.
Man Utd in Mane talks
Last week, it was claimed that Liverpool were in pole position to sign the 18-year-old in the summer. However, it was later revealed that Man Utd also hold an interest in Mane.
Now, reliable Old Trafford insider Sully has confirmed that the Red Devils are indeed keen on snapping up the wonderkid. In fact, initial talks with the player's camp have already taken place.
The interest in Mane is driven purely by the recruitment department, and he is considered a long-term target, irrespective of who will be appointed as permanent head coach in the summer.
The report acknowledges that Mane is fielding interest from numerous suitors and that he has yet to make a decision on whether or not to stay at Wolves for another season. It can't be denied that a season as a guaranteed starter in the Championship could do wonders for his development.
Man Utd view him as a first-team signing, but he would surely nevertheless have to settle for a substitute's role initially, given the calibre of attackers currently at Old Trafford. Wolves, meanwhile, will do everything in their power to get him to stay.
