Chelsea seek revenge on Liverpool for Jeremy Jacquet transfer
Just mere weeks after Chelsea lost out to Liverpool in the race for the signature of Rennes centre-back Jeremy Jacquet, the clubs are set to fight for the services of another standout Ligue 1 defender.
Toulouse centre-back Charlie Cresswell, who was viewed by Rennes as a potential Jacquet replacement, is being eyed by Chelsea, Liverpool, and a host of clubs from across Europe, according to Sportsboom.
Rennes have also been reported to view Cresswell as a Jacquet replacement.
Cresswell’s current club sits comfortably in 10th place, 13 points off the relegation zone with 12 matches to play. Toulouse’s 26 goals allowed rank fourth in Ligue 1, behind only first-placed Lens, second-placed PSG, and third-placed Lyon.
A Leeds Utd academy product, Cresswell has scored three goals and provided two assists this season. He played for the England under-21s in the 2025 U21 Euros, where he scored in England’s tournament-opening win against Czechia.
Premier League titans look to fill gaps at centre-back
Neither Chelsea nor Liverpool have received consistent play at centre-back this season.
Chelsea were dealt a blow before the season even started when Levi Colwill suffered a torn ACL, and the club’s refusal to sign a replacement was a motivating factor behind former manager Enzo Maresca’s midseason departure.
Liverpool saw summer signing Giovanni Leoni go down with the same injury in September, leaving the Reds with only Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, and Joe Gomez as its recognized central defenders.
As mentioned, Liverpool beat their Premier League rivals to the signature of 20-year-old Jacquet, who will arrive at Anfield this summer. Jacquet and 19-year-old Leoni are clearly viewed as the partnership of the future, but the club could stand to bring in a defender with a little more experience.
Cresswell, at age 23, is physically strong and dominant in the air. He would have to adjust to playing with the ball at his feet more often — Toulouse average the lowest share of possession in Ligue 1 at 42.7% — and moving from a back three to a back four.
