Jadon Sancho's nightmare is OVER amid Aston Villa resurgence
Manchester United loanee Jadon Sancho has finally found his feet at Aston Villa, and Unai Emery's latest comments bode well for the winger's future.
The 25-year-old has had five difficult years since joining Man Utd in a blockbuster €85 million deal from Borussia Dortmund in 2025. Unable to recapture his Bundesliga form at Old Trafford, Sancho was discarded and turned into a perennial loanee.
Last summer, his career hit its nadir when loan club Chelsea decided that they would rather pay Man Utd a €6 million fine than exercise their purchase obligation for the former England winger.
This season, he is on loan at Aston Villa. He arrived in a last-minute panic deal and predictably struggled in the early stages of the season. However, in recent weeks, Sancho's form has actually improved.
He scored against RB Salzburg in the Europa League and set up Morgan Rogers' goal against Bournemouth. Of course, there is still plenty of room for improvement, but the usually hard-to-please Unai Emery is excited by what he is now seeing from Sancho.
Emery: Sancho signing is not out of the question
Speaking ahead of Wednesday's clash with Brighton, the Basque manager revealed that he would not be opposed to keeping Sancho beyond this season if he can manage to improve further.
“Not yet," Emery responded when asked if Villa were thinking about signing Sancho. "But he is a fantastic player. Hopefully, he can help us by increasing his qualities in our structure, like he is doing.
"He will need another contract, and maybe it could be here. If he plays his best football, we will want him. But also other teams could be involved in the interest for him.
"This is football and all matches are important for every player and the club’s future, how we can achieve our objective. The first part of the season was not enough - he was working and trying, but not achieving the performance we needed. Now he is getting better.
"He is [understanding] the challenge for him and us. I spoke with him a few times about the challenge we have with him and that he has with us. He must be demanding [of] himself and consistent like he is now. But [we want] more and more. It is not the time to wait. We need everyone with their wishes and qualities."
Sancho will become a free agent in the summer. Man Utd have already decided that they will not exercise their one-year option in his contract in order to finally get his hefty wages off the books. If he keeps improving, Villa Park could become his long-term home.
