The Argentina international has been widely tipped to leave the Wanda Metropolitano following the conclusion of the 2025-26 campaign and he has set his sights on completing a move to Hansi Flick’s side.

That is according to TEAMtalk reporter Graeme Bailey, who claims that negotiations with Barcelona have already taken place ahead of the upcoming summer transfer window.

Alvarez has reportedly grown increasingly frustrated at Atletico Madrid this season and he is keen to join the Camp Nou giants ahead of next season, despite their well-documented financial issues.

However, a move to Barcelona is far from guaranteed and the Blaugrana’s transfer business is currently on hold until after the next presidential election takes place in mid-March.

Alvarez’s representatives have reportedly informed fellow suitors Arsenal, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain that he favours a Camp Nou switch, although he is open to returning to the Premier League if a transfer to Barcelona fails to materialise.

Rumours from Argentina have suggested that Chelsea are advancing in talks over a possible deal for Alvarez this summer, while Arsenal are also set to challenge for his signature amid reports that Gabriel Jesus could be sold.

However, Barcelona are currently regarded as the frontrunners, with Alvarez keen to link up with the reigning La Liga champions.

Julian Alvarez wants Barcelona move

Alvarez has notched 40 goals and 13 assists in 89 appearances since joining Atletico Madrid in 2024 and he is viewed as Barcelona’s dream long-term replacement for Robert Lewandowski.

The World Cup winner hasn’t scored in his last 11 club games, but the Blaugrana hierarchy are determined to bring him to Camp Nou amid the uncertain future of Lewandowski.

The Poland legend is into the final four-and-a-half months of his current Barcelona contract and despite rumours of being offered a one-year extension, an agreement has not yet been reached.
