Hughes development leaves Salah future in doubt

Mohamed Salah could be set to take a giant step towards the Saudi Premier League after a potential shake-up at Liverpool that could facilitate a big money transfer for the Egyptian.

Salah has failed to recapture his best form this season, having scored just four times in the Premier League, and, with his current contract set to expire in 2027, Liverpool could finally be ready to cash in on their club legend.

Tensions appear to have calmed down since Salah’s controversial interview in December and the 33-year-old did not force an exit from Anfield during the January transfer window despite speculation, following a bust-up with manager Arne Slot.

However, Salah is understood to be in talks with Al-Ittihad and the situation could further be intensified by reports from Saudi Arabia claiming that Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes is in advanced talks to join Al-Hilal.

Hughes only joined Liverpool from Bournemouth in 2024 but the Scotsman has been heavily linked with a move to Saudi Arabia in recent months and he is said to be ‘close’ to joining the Saudi Pro League leaders, although no further information has been given.

Having negotiated Salah’s extension with Liverpool last year, Hughes could be a major factor in bringing the forward to Saudi Arabia this summer, with the Reds already thought to be exploring replacements for their talismanic superstar.

Liverpool retain hope of Konate extension

Liverpool will be hoping that the club can avoid further destabilisation by keeping hold of another star in Ibrahima Konate, whose contract is set to expire in June.

Konate has long been linked to the likes of Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid but the Frenchman has seen a jump in his form in recent weeks, having endured a difficult start to the campaign.

According to The Athletic, Liverpool have not given up hope of convincing Konate to sign a new contract and have pointed to the fact that Salah and Virgil van Dijk did not extend their deals until April last year.

Konate has not made a decision over his future as of yet and there is not believed to be an agreement with any other club, with Liverpool still keen to keep hold of a popular player in the dressing room and a key figure on the pitch.

Al-Hilal leave Darwin out of squad

Former Liverpool star Darwin Nunez has already fallen out of favour at Al-Hilal, with the striker being left out of the club’s squad for the remainder of the Saudi Pro League season.

Nunez had scored six goals in 16 league matches in Saudi Arabia after his €50m summer move from Liverpool but the Uruguayan has become redundant following the arrival of Karim Benzema in January.

While Nunez will still be able to play in the Asian Champions League, Al-Hilal can only register eight foreign players in their league squad and the ex-Liverpool star has not made the cut.

Rumours will now be rife over whether Nunez will make a quick departure from the club in the summer if he is not considered a long-term part of manager Simone Inzaghi’s plans.

Liverpool aim to beat Man Utd to Salah replacement

Liverpool have already beaten a Premier League rival to the signature of one wonderkid, and the Reds are looking to do the same for a talent also chased by Man Utd.

Yan Diomande, RB Leipzig’s 19-year-old winger with seven goals and four assists in 20 Bundesliga appearances, is the player in question.

Liverpool are said to view the Ivory Coast international as a replacement for Mohamed Salah, while Man Utd have reportedly held meetings with the player’s entourage ahead of a possible summer transfer, as reported by Sport Witness.

Liverpool already beat Chelsea to sign Rennes centre-back Jeremy Jacquet. They will want to do the same against Man Utd for Diomande.

Reds eye former Leeds defender

Liverpool could turn to another Ligue 1 defender after the signing of Jeremy Jacquet, with reports that Slot’s side are interested in Toulouse star Charlie Cresswell.

Cresswell has impressed in France since leaving Leeds for €4.5m in 2024 and several reports have now claimed that Liverpool could target the 23-year-old this summer.

The likes of West Ham, Chelsea, Tottenham and Newcastle have also been credited with an interest for a player likely to command a fee in excess of €30m.
