Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali is reportedly set to be the subject of a major transfer tug-of-war this summer amid interest from a number of top clubs.

The Italy international has established himself as one of the best midfielders in the Premier League since his move to St James’ Park in 2023 and his progress is being closely monitored ahead of a possible transfer later this year.

Arsenal were linked with a spectacular Deadline Day move for the 25-year-old, following a serious foot injury sustained by Mikel Merino, and while talks with Newcastle didn’t take place, Tonali is expected to attract substantial transfer interest this summer.

That is according to The Sun, who claim that Arsenal are one of three Premier League giants plotting a potential deal that could reach €116 million (£100m). It’s reported that Mikel Arteta is a huge admirer of Tonali and the Gunners boss would like to pair him in midfield with England star Declan Rice.

However, Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola would also reportedly love to sign the former AC Milan midfielder, while Chelsea are monitoring his development too.

Despite this, Tonali is understood to be settled at Newcastle and is unlikely to push for an exit this summer. But, if they fail to secure qualification for the Champions League this term, the Italian’s head could be turned.

Sandro Tonali to Arsenal?

Following rumours of a bombshell move to Arsenal on Deadline Day, Tonali’s agent, Giuseppe Riso, told reporters: “We never had any conversation with Arsenal.

“Newcastle were never gonna let Tonali leave in January. There’s absolutely nothing into it. We didn’t even talk about it.”

Despite this, football transfer news expert David Ornstein has revealed that Tonali was offered to Arsenal by Riso on the final day of the winter window, which led to an initial exploration of a potential deal.

However, Newcastle blocked an exit and a transfer therefore failed to materialise.
