Director confirms SHOCK Raheem Sterling offer: We couldn't believe it!
Former Chelsea winger Raheem Sterling has been offered to Union Berlin, director Horst Heldt has confirmed.
The 31-year-old is a free agent after having his Chelsea contract terminated following six months in 'Bomb Squad' limbo. Sterling was forced to train individually and with the club's youth teams after failing to secure a summer transfer.
Despite being Chelsea's best-paid player, Sterling hadn't played for the club since the 2023/24 season. He spent last term out on loan at Arsenal but did not manage to impress.
He is now free to choose his next club, although it seems that suitors are not exactly queuing up to sign the former Liverpool and Man City star. In fact, it appears that the player's representatives are offering him to anyone in Europe.
In the summer, Sterling was determined to remain in London, but he is now open to heading abroad. One of the sides that have been offered Sterling's services are middling Bundesliga outfit Union Berlin.
Sterling offered to Union
Director Horst Heldt confirmed as much to Sky Germany and admitted that he couldn't believe it. “Sometimes you have to rub your eyes," he said. "In this case, it didn’t really seem serious. We didn’t pursue it any further.”
Union, of course, have a recent history of making (and not making) spectacular signings. In January 2023, the side from Berlin's eastern Köpenick district were in advanced talks to sign former Real Madrid star Isco.
They ultimately pulled out of the deal because the finances weren't right after the player's agent reportedly attempted to renegotiate the terms of the agreement. The following summer, however, they managed to sign Juventus legend Leonardo Bonucci.
As for Sterling, it seems unlikely that he will end up in the Bundesliga, though Bayern Munich previously explored a deal. Today's deadline doesn't apply to free agents, but the winger nevertheless has to make up his mind in a timely manner.
Should he intend to remain in the Premier League, Sterling will have to choose his next club in the next few days because the registration deadline for the rest of the season is on Thursday.
