Chelsea agree transfer fee for Premier League wonderkid
Chelsea have agreed to pay Crystal Palace a compensation fee in excess of €1.15 million (£1m) for Jesse Derry following his move to Stamford Bridge last summer.
The England U19 international was courted by several top clubs across Europe after rejecting the chance to sign professional terms at Selhurst Park and he eventually opted to join Chelsea in July.
A boyhood Blues fan, Derry made his first-team debut for the club as a second-half substitute against Hull City in the FA Cup last Friday and he has continued to train with the senior side ahead of their Premier League clash versus Burnley on Saturday.
The 18-year-old has been a standout performer for Chelsea’s youth teams this season, scoring 11 goals and providing four assists in 23 appearances, and he could be in line for additional first-team involvement over the coming months amid Jamie Gittens’ absence with a hamstring injury.
Due to the fact Derry was a homegrown player under the age of 24, Crystal Palace were owed compensation following his summer move to Chelsea and The Athletic have confirmed that a fee in excess of €1.15m (£1m) was agreed between the clubs.
This avoided the need for a tribunal, which was recently required to settle the fee Chelsea were owed from Liverpool for Rio Ngumoha.
Jesse Derry: The next Jack Grealish?
The Chelsea youngster has been widely compared to Everton loanee Jack Grealish in recent years, largely due to his style of play and signature hairstyle, and his family is close with the England international due to the fact the 30-year-old played under Derry’s father Shaun during his time at Notts County.
Grealish even congratulated Derry following his debut against Hull last week, posting on Instagram: “Congrats bro, was top when you came on also.”
Meanwhile, Derry himself posted: “What a night. An absolute honour to make my debut for this massive club.”
