Marc Guehi: Crystal Palace reveal January transfer price – but is he worth it?
Marc Guehi continues to be the hottest property on the January transfer market, with Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool among the teams monitoring the Crystal Palace centre-back.
City are the only side that appear ready to make a transfer offer this month, with Pep Guardiola set to respond to an injury crisis in the heart of his defence that has seen Josko Gvardiol and Ruben Dias both ruled out for extended periods.
Guehi, though, can afford to be patient before making his next big career choice. He is out of contract at the end of the season, at which point he will become a free agent.
Marc Guehi transfer: What’s the state of play?
With Arsenal and Liverpool apparently maintaining a watching brief, City are said to be preparing an offer for Guehi.
Bayern Munich are also said to be tracking the 25-year-old, with the Bundesliga side having the advantage of being able to open formal contract negotiations as they are a foreign club.
Despite all this, a move is not expected to take place this month.
City’s bid is unlikely to be enough to tempt Palace into a sale.
What is Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi asking price?
Crystal Palace are seeking a fee in the region of €40-46 million (£35-40m) for Marc Guehi, according to Sky Sport Deutschland transfer expert Florian Plettenberg.
While this may seem like a big fee for a player who only has half a season to run on his contract, it falls into line with his Estimated Transfer Value (ETV) of €43m – right in the middle of the Palace’s valuation.
FootballTransfers’ algorithm takes into account a wide variety of factors - including time left to run on his contract. As such, the fee that Palace would appear to be a fair one.
Guehi, after all, is a player that Oliver Glasner’s side do not want to rush to replace, particularly in January, when players are notoriously more expensive.
His future looks destined to be elsewhere, but unless Man City come up with the goods, it appears they face a battle in the free agent market with Liverpool and Arsenal to strike a deal for the England star.
