Man Utd target agrees terms with shock €30m transfer now close
Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta has agreed terms with Juventus amid interest from Manchester United.
The 28-year-old could be the next key man at Crystal Palace to announce his departure. The Eagles have already lost captain Marc Guehi to Man City and will also have to look for a new coach in the summer following Oliver Glasner's decision not to extend his contract.
In a remarkable press conference on Friday, Glasner admitted that Mateta could leave as well. "There will be a price where Crystal Palace say '18 months left in his contract, we will do the deal if JP wants," he said. "If nobody pays this price, then JP will stay."
Sky Sports recently confirmed that Man Utd have been monitoring the France international as they look for a potential replacement for Joshua Zirkzee, who is waiting to receive the green light to complete a €40 million switch to AS Roma.
However, it is not the Red Devils who have stepped up their pursuit of Mateta in recent days. Juventus are the side that is pushing hard to secure a deal for the striker.
Juventus agree Mateta terms
Discussions between the player's camp and the Bianconeri have been held in recent days, resulting in the two parties broadly agreeing on personal terms. Now, it is up to Juventus to match Palace's valuation.
According to Gianluca di Marzio, the Eagles want at least €30m for their star attacker. Ben Jacobs reports that it is currently unclear whether Juventus are able to reach Palace's asking price.
However, Mateta is said to be keen on the move, and Palace are clearly already trying to bring in a replacement. An opening package for Sidiki Cherif worth €16m has been knocked back by Angers, who want €25m-€30m for their talented youngster.
Mateta revealed earlier this season that his sole focus this term is on impressing Didier Deschamps so that he will be included in France's World Cup squad. Clearly, he feels that joining Juventus will boost his chances, and understandably so.
Palace appear to be a sinking ship at the moment. With Glasner and Guehi heading for the exit - Glasner may even get sacked after his stunning rant on Saturday - and results falling off a cliff, it is difficult to blame Mateta for wanting out.
