The Red Devils have been searching for a new caretaker boss since the departure of Ruben Amorim on 5 January and they have opted to turn to Carrick, who has been out of work since being sacked by Middlesbrough in June.

Darren Fletcher has been in temporary charge since Amorim’s exit, but he is set to be relieved of his interim duties following Man Utd’s decision to give the job to Carrick until the end of the campaign.

The 44-year-old has agreed a deal to become the new Man Utd boss and an announcement is now expected to be released shortly, as per Ornstein.

Carrick is expected to take charge of his first game back at the club against arch-rivals Manchester City in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.

Michael Carrick to become new Man Utd boss

The former Man Utd midfielder was handed a coaching position at Old Trafford after his retirement in 2018 and he was named as the club’s caretaker manager following the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in 2021.

Carrick subsequently departed the club after Ralf Rangnick’s arrival and he was then appointed as the new Middlesbrough head coach in October 2022. He spent two-and-a-half years at the Riverside Stadium, before being sacked last summer, where he maintained a 46% win rate.

Carrick has already received the endorsement of Man Utd legend Cristiano Ronaldo, who posted on X following his interim spell in 2021-22: “Michael Carrick was a class act as a player and he can become a great coach as well. Nothing is impossible for this guy.

“Personally, I’m proud to have played with him by my side as well as with him as a manager on our bench.”
