Chelsea have held internal discussions over a possible move for Real Madrid superstar Vinicius Jr, a reliable source has confirmed.

The 25-year-old continues to be the subject of speculation due to his tense relationship with Xabi Alonso. Vinicius has reportedly told Real Madrid president Florentino Perez that he will not extend his contract as long as he does not see eye-to-eye with the coach.

With Vinicius' current terms set to expire in 2027, this has naturally set off alarm bells, not only at Real Madrid but across the world of football. Los Blancos, of course, do not want to lose their superstar winger on a free transfer and may have to cash in on him in the summer.

Saudi clubs hold a long-standing interest and are prepared to offer Vinicius eye-watering amounts of money. However, a move to the Middle East would come at the cost of leaving the elite European stage.

In recent days, it has also been posited that Chelsea could look to make a move for the Brazil international. While talk of a supposed €150 million bid was downplayed on Tuesday, Sky Germany has now confirmed that a transfer to Stamford Bridge may not be as far-fetched as it seems.

Chelsea are interested in Vinicius Jr

Reporter Florian Plettenberg investigated the Vinicius rumours by consulting sources both at Real Madrid and Chelsea, and he claims that there is indeed a kernel of truth in the links.

The idea of making a move for Vinicius has been floated at Stamford Bridge, but it is nowhere near as advanced as some reports have made it out to be. There has been no bid, and Real Madrid sources insist that the winger is not available in January.

However, there is an acceptance that it could be a different story in the summer if he indeed opts not to sign a contract extension. Real Madrid will not allow a player of his value and stature to run down his deal.

As things stand, it is too early to say whether or not Chelsea will act on this tentative interest in the summer. The Blues have moved away from superstar signings of this nature in recent years, and Vinicius would shatter their incentive-based wage structure.

But the fact that his name has been discussed as a potential market opportunity for the summer shows that there must be some senior figures at Stamford Bridge who would be willing to go against the grain.

There is an argument to be made that the current youth-focused model has not really worked, and a recent survey among club members showed that an overwhelming majority of supporters are dissatisfied with the current project and the state of the club.

There is an appetite for change. Given the underwhelming impact of Jamie Gittens and Alejandro Garnacho, Vinicius would be an undeniable upgrade and a potential game-changer for Chelsea. Together with Liam Rosenior, he could herald a new era at Stamford Bridge.
