Chelsea learn chances of Mike Maignan signing after Liam Rosenior 'request'
Liam Rosenior has reportedly requested that Chelsea sign Mike Maignan, but AC Milan are now confident that he will extend his contract.
The France international was the subject of one of last summer's biggest transfer sagas. Chelsea attempted to sign Maignan before the Club World Cup and even agreed personal terms with him.
The Blues, though generally content with their goalkeeper options, felt that he was a market opportunity too good to turn down due to his contract, which is due to expire this summer.
However, no deal materialised as AC Milan refused to let one of the world's best goalkeepers depart on the cheap. Chelsea ultimately walked away from the deal after seeing two bids rejected.
Speculation surrounding the future of Maignan has persisted, but it was thought that Chelsea are no longer interested in a move. That has apparently changed now that Liam Rosenior has replaced Enzo Maresca as head coach, TEAMtalk claims.
Rosenior wants Maignan, but...
The report asserts that Maignan remains a "prime target" for the Blues and that Rosenior has endorsed the plans to sign an elite replacement for the much-maligned Robert Sanchez.
The problem with this plan, though, is that Maignan is no longer guaranteed to depart the Rossoneri this summer. Milan have made him an improved contract offer, and reports increasingly suggest that he will sign an extension.
Gianluca di Marzio and L'Equipe report that Maignan is close to signing fresh terms, while Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that a new proposal is on the table and that Milan are "optimistic" of receiving his green light.
This will be a blow to Chelsea, but the Blues are well-stocked in the goalkeeper department. Mike Penders, who has impressed under Rosenior at Strasbourg, is set to return from his loan in the summer and is expected to challenge for the No.1 spot.
