Liverpool are to blame for Florian Wirtz’s inconsistent form because they do not know how to use him properly, according to Bayern Munich legend Uli Hoeness.

Expectations were high when the Reds pipped Bayern and Manchester City to sign Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen for €125million (£116m) in June 2025.

But while the 23-year-old has registered 21 goal contributions (eight goals, 13 assists) in 59 games, more was expected from the jewel of German football.

Sky Sports pundit and Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher said Wirtz should be dropped from the starting eleven after the defeat by Man City earlier this month.

Carragher - who spent his entire career with Liverpool, winning 11 trophies - feels Wirtz is “neat and tidy” on the eye but not decisive enough in the final third.

However, former Bayern striker Hoeness - who acts as the club's honorary president - believes Liverpool are the reason why Wirtz is struggling to meet expectations.

Hoeness is adamant Wirtz would flourish at Bayern because they would know how to get the best out of him - unlike Liverpool in his opinion.

In quotes carried by Welt Am Sonntag via Fabrizio Romano, Hoeness said: “Florian Wirtz would play much better for Bayern than he does at Liverpool.

“I watch a lot of his games. They haven't integrated him properly at all. In Leverkusen, he got every ball; in Liverpool, he's just one among many [stars].”

Wirtz has recorded three goal contributions in last three games

The timing of Hoeness’ comments are strange, however, with Wirtz having registered three goal contributions in his last three games for Liverpool.

Germany midfielder Wirtz recorded assists in the wins over LASK and Brentford in the Champions League and Premier League respectively earlier this month.

He also scored what proved to be the winner as the Reds came from behind to beat Villarreal in Europe’s premier club competition on Tuesday.

Wirtz will be hoping to make another telling contribution when Liverpool entertain high-flying Brighton and Hove Albion in the Premier League today.

The Seagulls are unbeaten in their last eight games in all competitions but Liverpool could move above fourth-placed Chelsea with a win at Anfield.

Meanwhile, Bayern travel to Freiburg in the Bundesliga this afternoon, with the German giants currently second in the table - albeit with a game in hand.
