Mikel Arteta has ruled out the January departure of an Arsenal star who has admitted he would consider an exit from the club in the future after receiving an approach from his ‘dream’ team.

The Gunners continued their run at the top of the Premier League with a narrow and late win over Wolves on Saturday, in which Gabriel Jesus made his first Premier League appearance in 11 months after suffering a serious knee injury in January.

Having enjoyed a 28-minute cameo in the mid-week win over Club Brugge, Jesus came on against Wolves in the 81st minute and played a hand in the winning goal by challenging defender Yerson Mosquera, who headed into his own net in injury time.

Jesus’ comeback came after Arteta spoke prior to the match and ruled out letting the Brazilian leave in January, saying: "No, I don't consider [his exit] and especially with the situation we have right now.

"I think Gabby has a lot to offer to the team and he is proving that straight away in the first minutes that he was available to play. He has put so much [in] to be in this position again and now the focus is to be with us.

"A player of his quality, a player who has given us so much and when he comes with the energy he did the other day, he is certainly a player who has to be pushing and aiming [to start], that's for sure."

Jesus told to ‘come home’ as boyhood club plan dream approach

Jesus had been considered a candidate to be sold after the summer arrivals of Viktor Gyokeres, Noni Madueke and Eberechi Eze, all of whom are likely to be ahead of the 28-year-old in the pecking order.

With next summer’s World Cup on the horizon, there had been suggestions that Jesus could be loaned out to find fitness and regular first team football after interest from his former club Palmeiras.

The Brazilian side are desperate to bring Jesus back to his boyhood club, with the president even pleading for the forward to ‘come home’, while the player himself has admitted he will eventually look to return to Palmeiras when the time is right.

Jesus insisted that he still wanted to prove his worth to Arsenal but he still had his mind on Palmeiras eventually, saying: “The interest from Palmeiras will always exist, both from them and from me. But there’s been nothing formal.

“It’s just the natural interest of a kid who came from their academy and dreams of going back one day.”
